Pikachu, Pidgey, Weedle, Diglett, and Charmander. No, I have not lost my mind. But what I have found is more time with my 15-year-old son, Jack.
I would like to take a moment to thank the developers of Pokemon Go. Because of you, my man-child now likes to go with me wherever I go. When I once couldn’t pay him enough to come to the grocery store with me, he now intentionally asks “Mom, where are you going? Can I come?”
Errr…excuse me….give me a moment to catch my breath and put my beating heart back inside my chest. OF COURSE, you can come!
Okay, it’s not the picture perfect mom/son time that June Clever might have longed for, but in this age of social media connection, screen time and technology, I will take what extra one-on-one time I can get. My son wants to BE with me, and that makes me light up like a Christmas tree!
Instead of being disappointed in the fact that he is not spending “quality” time with me, I make it a point to try and get in with him. So I ask “Are there any Poke stops nearby?”, “Where can I drive you to for a good catch?” With the hands of time moving oh so swiftly and only three more years until Jack heads off to college, I am cool with this arrangement. (And just think how much time us moms spend running errands. My errands no longer feel like a punch in the face. Spending time with someone you love makes the most mundane things an adventure.)
This whole Pokemon Go thing got me thinking; this must be how God feels about me! He too must geek out when I say, “Dad, where are you going right now? Can I come too?” Oh, how it lights Him up! Dare I even say, although He desires ALL my attention, and I do my very best to set aside time for that each day, He is not offended when I spend time with Him while I am going to the grocery store, the post office, or moving my body. He loves being in my presence as I love being in His. In His presence, He is interested in what I am interested in and hides things for me to seek and find.
Just as it’s my son’s goal to make the next big catch, and it gives me great joy to see him smile when he does, so it must be for my heavenly Father. God loves to have me doing life in His presence, keeping my joy on, with the daily goal of looking for the Kingdom treasure He has hidden just for me.
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence, there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. – Psalm 16:11
So to all you Pokemon hunters out there under the age of 16 who need us moms to get you out and about, just know this; we love you, and we love to be needed! And please, don’t forget to look up once in a while – we would like you to see you go off to college and change the world, not walking into ditches, trees or traffic. You’re way too awesome for that dumb.
