Living In The New And Awkward

Living In The New And Awkward

Recently I was itching to do something new, so I decided to make homemade bone broth. Of course, I could have made my life a little easier by buying a box of it at the store, but for some strange reason, my inner pioneer woman felt drawn to the primal act of collecting and combining bone carcasses and leftover vegetable parts and then tossing them into a slow cooker for 36 hours. I was ready to do this work and then patiently wait for some sort of magical liquid to emerge, a liquid that the wellness world has been raving about.

As I hacked away at the bones, my husband and kids looked on bewildered, curious, and a bit fearful. No doubt they were worried that mom was no longer just talking about moving off the grid into a mud hut somewhere where we could all be connected to each other beyond smart phones. Perhaps this bone broth ordeal was her first step into a greater kind of weird.

They watched and recoiled at the sight of the first chicken foot sliding across my cutting board. Into the pot my magic health potion went, set to cook steadily for a day or two.

I was doing something new. It looked weird. It felt weird.

The next morning when I woke up, my husband got out of bed to go to the bathroom and a strange smell punched me in the face.

“Simon, is something wrong with your stomach?” I asked.

“No, why?” he replied.

“Because something smells like POOP!”  I said.

Simon chuckled and said, “That’s your bone broth permeating the whole house.”

I laughed and felt even crazier than the day before.

I share this story to encourage you and perhaps to help you feel a little less weird. When doing something new, you can expect things to get a little strange. You can expect to feel like an alien at times, and perhaps even an outcast. Not knowing what you’ve gotten yourself into and what might take place if you step out to venture with God rather than stay stuck in the safe zone is part of the story for each of us who follow Him.

When we do things that others have heard about but not yet seen, or when we have the boldness to try something unfamiliar, we can expect stares and bewilderment as others wonder at what strangeness has overtaken us. We may even feel like a stranger to ourselves.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”

 1 Peter 2:11-12

New is new. It is awkward, alarming, and perhaps even a little stinky at times. But trust me on this, Beloved, as a Christ-follower, you do not want to miss out. When we have the desire to turn from something old that is stealing our life in order to turn towards something new, there is greater change happening beyond what can be seen. Our desire for new is backed by the power of God in us– not just to MAKE the change but to SUSTAIN the change.

Be a little strange. Be a little out of this world. Be made new.
