5 ways to connect with God throughout the day

connect with God

In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul instructs Christians to “pray without ceasing.”  While set aside times with Jesus are important, you can also incorporate prayer throughout your day by building prompts into your daily schedule.

To start, identify “anchor times” within your day during which you can briefly connect with God. Imagine being able to draw a line over your every step during the day, creating a map of your routine. At the end of the week, where would your “hot spots” lie–maybe in the kitchen, in your car, or by the coffee pot at work.  In these moments, you have an opportunity to connect with Jesus.

To get you started, here are five ideas on how to connect with God during your day:

1. While getting dressed

“Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.” – Colossians 3:10 MSG

As you are getting dressed, ask God to clothe you in Christ (Romans 13:14).  Take a few extra moments as you are pulling on clothes for the day to invite God to remind you that you are clothed in righteousness (Job 29:14).  Allow those moments to become a prayer, and put on the Armor of God to prepare for your day (Ephesians 6)

2. While preparing food in the kitchen

“Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.” – Psalm 30:4 NIV

You may be in the habit of blessing your food before you eat, but you can also turn food preparation into worship.  Thank God for his provision. Ask Him what he would like you to prepare, and then, serve yourself or your family with a grateful heart. 3. While refilling your coffee

“I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” – Ephesians 3:19 CEV

In A Liturgy for the Ritual of Morning Coffee, author Douglas McKelvey writes, “let me enter this new day aware of my need and awake to your grace, O Lord.”  While brewing another cup, take a few moments to recognize your need for God and ask Him to meet you in that moment. Declare His goodness.  As you fill your cup, ask Jesus to fill you with all you need.

4. While sitting at a stoplight

“Stop striving and know that I am God…” -Psalm 46:10 NASB

At the moment, it is tempting to reach for your mobile device and answer one more email or check one more post.  What would it look like if you chose to use that time to connect with Jesus?  You could pray for the drivers around you, pray for the people you are going to encounter at your destination, or simply be still and listen for God to speak to you.

5. While brushing your teeth

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. ” -Philippians 4:8 ESV

Even the time spent brushing your teeth can be two minutes to train your brain to think about good things.  Think about a passage of Scripture you have taped to your mirror, or use that time to memorize the new scripture.  Pray a prayer of peace over your home. Rewind your day and find five things to be grateful for, and use the time to give God thanks.

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.” –Romans 12:1 MSG

Invite God into every moment of your life.  There is nothing too mundane for Him.  God loves to meet you right where you are.

  1. I have been so blessed to get to read this blog. I am blessed to know that there are people who can will use their talents and gifts to edify God and help others. Since following Revelation Wellness and Wellness Revelation and Clean Hearting, I have been able establish a more solid routine with exercise and spending time with God. I am still working on the food part, but, it’s improving…I am not so “weighed down.” Praise God. Keep doing what you all are doing and God is going to continue blessing you.

  2. These 5 ways to connect with God throughout our day are phenomenal ideas!! I love how she says that even the time brushing our teeth can be two minutes to train our brains to think about good things. We can be intentional with small minutes and moments through our day, instead of hoping and wishing for an hour to think higher. Love, love, love. Thank you, Iris !!
