Here are 6 ways music can move you

music

Music is rhythm, melody, and many times words, with dynamics and timing and various instruments.  The “flavors and colors” – varieties of music never end. It’s a full spectrum!

In Revelation Wellness, we use music from all genres, but we are mindful to remember that music and lyrics can affect our hearts and minds as well.  We can fill our souls with goodness as we move our bodies.

Here are six different ways music can move you:

1.Set your mind with music.  Music is registered in a special part of our brains. It has the capacity to change our brain, physiologically, and emotionally, affecting our thoughts and feelings. Have you ever noticed how hearing one song on the radio can change your perspective on your day?  If you’re unhappy, hearing an upbeat song with “you can do it” lyrics can change your whole mood. If you’re uptight and unsettled, listening to something calming can bring you peace.  And, if you’re a bit down in the dumps, a light and snappy tune can bring about a happy feeling and a smile on your face.

2. Improve your work with Music.  When you need to get a job done or get your body moving, find some music that speaks to you and helps give you a boost.  Depending on the type of work activity you need to do, mental, physical, creative, or repetitive,  find a style or genre that energizes and helps you focus on getting the work done.
SONG IDEA- “Gameface” – KJ-52, Kb & Soul Glow Activator

3. Enter into worship with Music.   Music is a gift from our creator God.  It is given for blessing and worship. We can praise Him with songs and spiritual hymns, and reach into our souls in songs of sorrow/lament to Him.  We can thank Him in remembrance of what He’s done. The Bible talks about making music, and singing, and using it in our remembrances. Music can also be used for expressing joy and sorrow and every emotion in between.
SONG IDEA – “Is He Worthy” – Chris Tomlin

4. Embrace your feelings with music.  Feel and express your feelings through songs and lyrics that speak your heart. Do you have a favorite type of music?  Do you play an instrument, or just listen to music, or sing, dance, or exercise to music?  Is there a favorite movie soundtrack that you crank up and sing at the top of your lungs?  Think of the songs that are able to put you in a special place and time in your life.  Music has great power to help us recall events, speak love, linger in lament, sit in sorrow, incite fear, feel peace, be bold for a cause, and give us hope and resolve for our future.
SONG IDEA – “Waymaker” – Leeland

5. Find joy and playfulness with music. Dance and move. Clap, laugh, and sing.  Hum or whistle. Play games.  Remember how to be silly and enjoy the gift of light-heartedness. Children do this naturally. They make up songs and beats. Kid’s songs can help us reach our inner freedom and joy and remember carefree days and happiness.  And, as adults, we can also move our bodies and feel the joy of life in our whole person… body, mind, and spirit.  Find time to remember and celebrate the good things and moments you are living!
SONG IDEA – “Celebrate” – Kool and the Gang

6. Gift your soul with restful music.  Calm your soul with gentle music that resonates with your breathing and settles your heart rate.  Find out which types of music help you relax. Soft, flowing music can help us sleep and enhance our body’s recovery and renewing systems. Sometimes even the “natural music” of birds chirping in the morning, water gurgling in a creek, frogs croaking at night, or leaves rustling in the wind, can ease our souls.
SONG IDEA – “Peace” – Jennifer Knapp

Let’s be mindful of the gift, and purposefully use the power of music in our lives to worship God, feed our souls, bless our hearts, and move our bodies, as we work, rest, and play.

Challenge: Put together a playlist to help you worship, rest, and play! Share your playlists with friends and family to encourage them during this tough time!
