A Harvest For The Taking

A Harvest For The Taking

I love birthdays. I love making a big deal of my friends and family. And honestly, I love my birthday just as much! It’s currently a birthday month in my world and I’m shameless about it. This year for my birthday I asked my parents for a lemon tree, which was out of the norm for me. I’m usually all about gift cards to the art supply store so I can go crazy buying colorful paints, but not this year. You see, two houses up the street from me is this gorgeous tree, and a few times a year I see an abundance of juicy fruit hanging off, begging to be picked. Unfortunately, proper neighbor etiquette dictates that I can’t simply walk over and pick the juicy fruit for my own. I drive by that tree daily and yearn to stop, pick, eat and enjoy this gorgeous fruit.

But, it’s not mine for the taking.

My very own fruit tree represents something new and fresh to me lately. I’ve been wrestling with the Lord about my desire for dreams and desires that I see Him fulfilling in others. It reminds me of that age-old adage, “the grass is always greener,” but it’s more like, “the fruit is juicier over on her tree, in her yard, Lord, that You are harvesting.” And in His kindness, God is showing me that His glorious fruit is sweet and juicy right where He has placed me, in my own yard.

God’s goodness is mine for the taking.

In our churchy world using churchy language, it might seem strange to talk about grasping God’s goodness for us. It might seem self-focused to think about craving God’s goodness and wanting what is mine. I can say all day long how I want you to experience God’s goodness, love, and mercy, because I really do want that for you. But am I valuing it for myself? Do I truly see myself as worthy of His goodness because of Christ? Oh this is touchy. I start bristling up just typing that sentence. Yet in Scripture, we have a divine invitation to open our heart and soul and let God plant His juicy fruit tree and experience abundance.

“Taste of His goodness; see how wonderful the Eternal truly is. Anyone who puts trust in Him will be blessed and comforted.” -Psalm 34:8, The Voice

We are invited to taste, experience, and dive into how wonderful God truly is and take hold of blessing and comfort.

“Every good gift bestowed, every perfect gift received comes to us from above, courtesy of the Father of lights. He is consistent. He won’t change His mind or play tricks in the shadows.” -James 1:17, The Voice

God never changes or plays jokes on us. We can count on His goodness in all things, in all situations.

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 ESV

Daily we can trust that He is not holding back, that His love and goodness are steadfast.

A harvest of fruit is at the ready. It is there for the taking. We have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control when we abide in Christ. It’s not selfish to want this for ourselves because when we live in this abundance, God’s goodness spills over into the lives of everyone around us.

Will you declare these truths today?

~You, God, are good and You delight in me!

~You are good and hold my desires in Your loving hands.

~You are good and for me, not against me.

~You are good even when I do not understand.

~Your goodness, Jesus, sustains my faith.

~I will declare Your goodness and stand firm in this Truth when life is uncertain.

~I will rejoice in Your goodness and speak about it boldly.

Let God plant His fruit tree in your heart. Sow into His work with diligent time in the Word, in prayer, and in worship. Water it with constant conversation with Jesus.

Praise Him for the harvest when you take hold of His goodness for yourself. And finally, be quick to pass along this harvest so others might taste and see that He is good.

The goodness is for you. Yes, you! In Jesus’ name we declare it over you today.
