Imagine a sea of people. The music is playing loudly over the sound system, and the instructor at Revelation Wellness Instructor Retreat is calling out moves. You find yourself in the far back corner because you are afraid of what others will think, or how you look, or the angle that the camera might see you from, so you hide. That was me. I was afraid to be seen, afraid of being too much, or not enough. I was afraid I wasn’t doing it right. I felt like I was ready to pen a memoir entitled, “Confessions of a Back Row Exerciser.”
Suddenly, the instructor shouts, “I need the back row to move up front and everyone else to move back a row!” Panicked, I scrambled to figure out how I could stay in the back row without anyone noticing, when a friend said, “Come with me!” Next thing I knew, I was in the front row! A few days later I was on stage with an instructor leading a gym full of people in a workout.
Isn’t that the way the Lord moves us? We can be too comfortable where we are, can’t we? He calls us closer. He calls us to be completely vulnerable. We are invited to rely on Him and trust in Him, especially when things get uncomfortable.
God invites us closer and asks us to “work out” every area of our lives alongside Him. By His blood, Jesus tore the veil that kept us from our Father and restored us our relationship with Him so that we could enter freely into God’s presence. We don’t have to look the part, we don’t have to have it all together. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. When we are aware that we don’t have it together, we can enter into greater reliance on Him and intimacy with Him. He longs to reveal Himself to us by proving just how sufficient He is for all of our needs.
I didn’t want to be on stage, but the freedom that God gave me there in those 3 minutes gave me the confidence in that moment to remember who I was and the God I belonged to. Did I have to be on stage to get that freedom? Of course not! But did it strengthen my faith and remind me that God could give me the strength to do something I didn’t think I could do? Absolutely!
In those brief moments, I saw a glimpse of the person God has created me to be. I had been holding back for far too long. To be honest, I didn’t move like the rest of the people on stage, and I wasn’t as coordinated as they were. In fact, I was going left when they were going right. But who really cares? I was moving with the Lord in freedom!
He’s calling us to rise up, friends. When I think of the phrase RISE UP, I can clearly remember someone from the stage grabbing my hand to help me up. In a sense, that’s what God is doing. He is reaching His hand out to help us rise up to trust Him and to obey what He asks of us.
I graduated Instructor Training with Platoon 19, and this Scripture was given to us when we started:
“Rise up and shine, for your light has come. The shining-greatness of the Lord has risen upon you. For see, darkness will cover the earth. Much darkness will cover the people. But the Lord will rise upon you, and His shining-greatness will be seen upon you.” -Isaiah 60:1-3
We have it all wrong when we try to make life about getting ourselves seen and noticed. God wants us to rise up so that He can shine through us and show the world His glory. Let’s step to the side and let the True Light shine through. If He wants you on stage, you can say yes with joy! Maybe He wants to shine through you so that someone else will be encouraged to rise up too. We each have something unique that The Lord can use to help bring other people into a greater understanding of who He is and the freedom that the gospel offers.
I want to leave you with the second verse from the song Happy Dance by Mercy Me:
Hey, yeah you!
In the back of the room with those concrete shoes.
It’s okay to cut loose.
Oh, it ain’t about how you move, but what moves you.
We’re so consumed with what we think we’re supposed to be
that we stop living like we know that we’re free.
There may be some illusion of comfort and safety in the back row, but why would we settle for that? There is so much more freedom with God to be had. Are you willing to rise up and step forward into the freedom He has for you?
