It’s SHOWTIME. Let’s Shine!

“Would you please pray for me? I’m afraid of losing what God has started to do in me.”

Her heart shaped face was a healthy pink shade, as her sweat hadn’t quite dried yet. I had seen this look many times, and every time I see it, my heart is punctured as if it’s never happened before. I’m looking at the face of pure love, I thought. Like the moment an adopted child finally surrenders to the truth that they can relax, they can breathe, their bed is not going anywhere, and that the food in the refrigerator is theirs for the taking whenever they please. Yet, as newly chosen children, they are still afraid of the dark, and there’s nothing we can do to keep the night from coming. As certain as the day, the night will also come.

What we need are new eyes to see and a new heart to believe that the darkness is necessary.  Darkness requires us to stay close to The Light. Being with God was always what God intended from the beginning. Without the dark, we would not have the beauty of light.

Oh, but we hate the suffering. And yet, it is through suffering that God can best teach us that He is good and faithful, that nothing is impossible for Him, and that nothing will be impossible for us. What if we didn’t run from the dark but instead embraced it as an invitation to learn how to SEE in the dark, to train us to see that the Kingdom is always at hand?

The other day we took a family outing to our local modern art museum. I had heard about a new installation that had rolled into town. I love art, and I mean all art. Even the kind where a pile of dirt with a dirty cooking pot sits in the middle of a clean, well-lit, stark white-walled space as a centerpiece. Why? Because that weird looking thing demands my attention.

Each us of have a unique beauty that commands attention. Even when what we have to offer is a kind of beauty that the world has deemed not quite the taste or type it prefers. God sees each of us. He loves what His hands have uniquely made, and each of us holds His attention.

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.”   – Matthew 5:14, The Message

As we walked into this new installation, we entered into a dark room. As our eyes adjusted, we quickly exchanged being disoriented for wonder. Inside this pitch-black box was close to 9,000 lights, hanging down from the ceiling in rows of cords. Thirty evenly spaced apart 1-inch LED lights hanging down from 30 different cords, lined up in 30 rows, creating a square cube of luminous magic. Like school-aged kids, we slithered our way into this field of light. Being inside of it felt like little drops of joy and love were cascading around you, demanding you to let go and just be.

Eventually, we stepped outside of this light field to sit on a black wooden bench. We watched others coming in as their faces exchanged levels of fear and curiosity for wonder and play. From the perspective of sitting and watching this electric rain, I could now see an overall view of what I couldn’t see before- the whimsical patterns of color moving in a rhythmic dance, as if by magic.

Without the dark, there is no light, and color that illuminates would be relegated to stay on a two-dimensional surface rather than dancing all around us in space and time.

So, let’s go back to the prayer request of the woman who got a breakthrough and is hoping for the revelation she’s gained to stay with her. Here’s what I say: you already have all that you need. The revelation of your soul, which came to you through the hearing of God’s Word and the movement of your body towards His truth, is now the light and the love of God WITH you, shining from within. You’ve got God! You carry the Holy Spirit! You’ve got all that you need. Don’t abandon Him when the next dark moment comes. Stay. Sit. Breathe. Once you can muster up the energy to do so, perhaps sing and move. God is with you, shining from within.

God created each one of us to display our personal light show to the world. All we are to do is REMAIN plugged into the source of this Love and Truth, so we can become a source of beauty for ourselves and others when the black-hole days come. For surely, they will come. How else would the light be seen?

When the darkness comes, you’ll hear God saying, “It’s showtime, child! Let’s SHINE!”

It’s time to stop being afraid of the dark. We are no longer orphans who live in fear, but the children of light who live in the open spaces whether it is day or night. This right to love, be loved, and live loved is our inheritance.

His light is His truth, like a lamp to our feet, gently and steadily guiding each one of us down our personal paths of healing.

  1. Thank you for this! It could not have come at a better time. I just finished the Weigh Less to Feed More class locally and the first half was light! Then I took a summer trip and for the last few weeks I have been feeling the darkness. I have felt how you opened todays post, “Would you please pray for me? I’m afraid of losing what God has started to do in me.” Thank you for this! I will cling to these words of hope today. He is not finished with me yet. What HE was faithful to begin HE WILL see to completion!
