God’s Plans In Our New Year

“Teach us to number our days so that we may truly live and achieve wisdom.” –Psalm 90:12, (Voice)

A New Year stretches out before us. We all have desires, goals, and maybe even some resolutions that we would like to press into as we begin the year. We have high hopes that this year we will do things differently, creating change and making great progress as we embark into 2018. But maybe, just maybe, we need to slow down for a moment and turn our focus elsewhere.

What if God – the One who made us and knows everything the future holds – wants to partner with us as we begin this New Year? What if He knows the next best steps for us? Maybe instead of creating a new list of goals, aspirations, and resolutions, God is inviting us to listen to His Voice. Inviting us to hearken our ear to the words of our GOOD, GOOD Father and hear His heart and plan for the calendar days ahead.

Let’s set aside how the world says we are to approach the New Year. Let’s close our ears to their chatter about “trying harder and buckling down” and instead ask God our Creator what He has for us in the New Year. The verse above can become the prayer of a heart that is hungry for MORE in our New Year. Lord, teach me to number my days – Only You know how many days I have on this earth, and instead of living with my own grand ideas and resolutions, I want to live with the knowledge that You have a plan for me marked by goodness, hope, and a future (Jer. 29:11).

I believe goal setting can be utterly life changing. Resolutions can kickstart changes that truly transform our lives, physically or otherwise.

But what if there is MORE?

I am approaching the New Year with a holy trembling as I ask the Lord what HE has for my new year. Some of the questions I’m asking look like this:

Lord, which relationships need cultivating this year? Where has bitterness, coldness, or familiarity snuck in with those I deem most dear?

Lord, what is Your desire for my physical body this year? Are there some physical goals we can work on together? What steps do I need to take in health and wholeness, walking hand-in-hand with You?

Lord, I submit my finances to You, again. May this be the year I freely give as You have given me. Are there places You are asking me to sow into financially? Do I need to rein in my spending habits or does a poverty mentality hold my view of money? Lord show me myself.

Lord, I want to grow spiritually this year like never before. Would You show me unholy habits and reveal the things I use to numb my heart with instead of running to You? More than anything, Lord, I want this year to be a year of YOU.

Lord, do You have one or two words specifically for me this year?

I hope these prayerful questions help you as you look into 2018 with the Lord.

Step by step, He desires to lead us with His love and goodness, if we will seek Him and follow.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Eternal, “plans for peace, not evil, to give you a future and hope—never forget that. At that time, you will call out for Me, and I will hear. You will pray, and I will listen. You will look for Me intently, and you will find Me.”  -Jeremiah 29:11-13 (Voice)

There is no better way to begin a new year than with the love and direction of our Good Father. Happy New Year, friends!
