Do your words speak life?

Speak Life

When I first sat down to write this blog post, I was unsure what God wanted me to share. It was actually my daughter who ended up sparking the topic for this post after she had a two hour long conversation with her mentor and returned to tell me about it. What had they talked about for so long? They had talked about one massive and glorious reality: GOD GIVES WORDS POWER.

At the very beginning of time, God SPOKE creation into existence! He literally spoke life. Not only that, He said that what He had spoken into existence was good, and made well.  Does that speak as loudly to anyone else as it does to me? This means that our words matter. We are created in God’s image, the One who speaks life!

Proverbs 18:21 (TPT) tells us that our “words are so powerful that they will kill or give life.”

Proverbs 16:24 (TPT) says, “Nothing is more appealing than speaking beautiful, life-giving words. For they release sweetness to our souls and inner healing to our spirits.”

How do you speak life? Whether words are spoken in encouragement, adoration, love, or prayer, they matter! God’s Word tells us that our life-giving words don’t have to be many in number. In fact, Proverbs 18:21 goes on to warn us that “the talkative person will reap the consequences.” The words we speak need to be full of encouragement and love, but intentional and heartfelt.

Who do you speak life to? How easy is it to give life-giving words to people outside of our immediate family, only to  lash out with such harsh words when we speak to our spouse, our kids, our parents, or our siblings? And how do we speak to ourselves? If you’re anything like me, you can speak the least life-giving words to yourself.

How does God speak life over us? All the way back in Genesis 1:31, God  looked at all He had made, and He said that “it was very good and He validated it completely.” In Psalm 139:14 (AMP), David tells God, “I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” He loved us so much that He sent His Son (John 3:16) to be the once-and-for-all sacrifice for our sins. We are told  in Romans 8:38-39 that nothing can separate us from God’s love. I love The Passion Translation, which reads: “So now I live with the confidence that there is nothing in the universe with the power to separate us from God’s love. I’m convinced that his love triumphs over death, life’s troubles, fallen angels, or dark rulers in the heavens. There is nothing in our present or future circumstances that weakens his love. There is no power above us or beneath us—no power can ever be found in the universe that can distance us from God’s passionate love, which is lavished upon us through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One!”

God speaks life over us with His love! What an immeasurable gift!

What is our charge? How can we speak His life over others? We’re called to “consider [thoughtfully] how we may encourage one another to love and to do good deeds,” (Hebrews 10:24 AMP); and we should let our “conversation be gracious and attractive” so that we will have “the right response for everyone” (Colossians 4:6 NLT). We are called to love others! Loving others, is, after all, the second greatest commandment after loving God Himself. Jesus says in Matthew 22:19 (TPT), “You must love your friend in the same way you love yourself.” We can’t love others well if we don’t first love God and understand His love for us.

So, to wrap it all up:

  • – God gives words power.
  • – God speaks live-giving Words over us.
  • – We have a calling to speak life-giving words over others and ourselves.
  • – We can speak life through encouragement, adoration, love, and prayer.

Papa God, thank You that in the beginning of time you spoke life when you spoke us into being. I pray that as those made in Your image, we will speak Your life-giving words to others and to ourselves. In the precious name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

  1. Ouch! This hit home for me. I speak life into others but rarely for myself. I’m glad you reminded me of my charge. I will move forward sharing affirmations of His promises and grace with myself. THANK you and praise God for the revelation.

    1. Thank you for sharing, Brigitte! I totally relate to how it is easier to speak life to others, than the speak life to myself. Keep pressing into Him!

  2. With everything that is happening in the world today, we need to be speaking words of encouragement and truth. As I heard earlier today on a video… More than ever now we need to be speaking from the Tree of Life….Revelation! Operating from the relm of heaven. Not…speaking words from the Tree of knowledge, good and evil. A place where we easily tap into.
Thank you for speaking the truth! These words need to be shared with everyone. ❤️

  3. I work to encourage others but don’t always Do the same for myself. I want to be an encouragement to others and say what is true. Lord help me to do right before you always in honesty and in truth. I pray that others would do the same.

  4. As I read Colossians 3 first with the peace of God controlling my thinking and second that I may have words and actions to obey him and give him glory, not me. My prayer is for myself and my sisters in Christ, that despite the busyness and challenges of day to day life, we can connect with the Lord enough in quietness and stillness that he has the chance to fill us with the peace he has for us. I pray that His peace would naturally flow out speaking louder than our own fears and insecurities. Thank you so much for this devotion and encouragement.

    1. What a beautiful response, Annamarie. We also pray that our brothers and sisters in Christ can be still and be loved in God’s goodness. He is always with us!

  5. Thank you for this MESSAGE today. I can totally relate as i fEel this is something god has been speaking to me about. I find myself DESIRING/speakIng/praying for gods truths for otheres but ive realized i have a hard time believing and speaking these things for myselF. I am also held accountable for my words spoken to thOse closest to me. Thank you lord for your gentlE and loving Lessons taught to me over and over.

  6. Through Ennagram and talking about it with my therapist, I’ve only recently become aware of an inner critic I that I have. Through reading this, I see that I need to use my voice to speak to that inner critic and set it straight on the word of God. Then I will find the peace and rest I’ve been longing for when it is silenced. Because of the inner critic, I have had little but criticism to speak to others. This is going to change as I change.

    1. Thank you for sharing, David! The Enneagram is a powerful tool! We pray the Lord guides you into His truth and transformation.
