What does Christ’s covenant love mean today?

covenant love

This journey God has taken me on – wow, it’s been intense. I never expected to experience the covenant love of our Creator God when I signed up for Instructor Training three years ago. But, believe me: I am so thankful for the unbreakable love of Jesus!

“The covenant love we’re called to must be a wholehearted, life-encompassing, community-impacting, exclusive commitment to our God.” – Jason DeRouchie

The covenant love of God starts and ends with Him, which is unbelievably good news for me! His love never quits. His love never fails. There is nothing I can do or not do that will separate me from His love. His love calls me to covenant with Him, and no matter how hard I might fight against Him, His love always wins. And He knows I wouldn’t want it otherwise.

God’s covenant love calls me to a wholehearted commitment to Him. I get to bring everything I have and everything I am into this unbreakable relationship. I have tried to hide parts of my heart, and I have tried to ignore or leave behind fragments of myself in my pursuit of Christ, but His pursuit of me leaves nothing uncovered, nothing unhealed, nothing unchanged. God’s love covers all of me – heart, soul, mind, and strength. He takes everything.

Sometimes I picture the exchange this way: me, handing over to Him a handful of bloody, broken pieces – everything of who I am in that moment. Then, He, with such intense emotion as only the Savior who stood at Lazarus’ tomb could express, takes the whole mess and gives me back His Wholeness. And then says, “Come, follow me.” He takes my everything and makes it whole, holy, and put-back-together, so I can pursue a wholehearted commitment to Him, every day. His covenant love could do nothing less but give me what I need to love Him back!

God’s covenant love for me is life-encompassing. He wants my whole heart and my whole life, and frankly, He’s earned it. That’s redemption. Practically speaking, this means my fitness isn’t for my own glory anymore, and that’s good news.  Personal glory, especially in fitness, is a super fickle friend.

If I am strong, it’s for His purpose. If I have endurance, it’s for His path. If I gain, it’s for His glory. When I rest, it’s from His grace. When God’s love encompasses every area of my life and my influence, I get to drop the weight of Look at Me and get under the yoke of Looking to Him, where I learn from Jesus what it means to truly live alive.

Life-encompassing love looks like freedom to choose hope instead of despair; freedom to trust Love’s promises instead of my pain. It means I can live open before Him with complete honesty, without fear, because He encompasses my everything.

“My Everything” includes my community, and isn’t it just like our God’s great love to spill over and out of us to impact everything and everyone around us? He’s that good! C.S. Lewis said “In God, there is no hunger that needs to be filled, only plenteousness that desires to give.” That’s my King! His covenant love is for me, but it is also for more than me. When my community sees, feels, and is changed by God’s love for me, it makes His beauty that much more irresistible. There is no limit to the lives God wants to love through us; His love never quits!

Who can you love with His love today? I often ask myself if God’s endless love for me is true (and it is!), how will that change the way I live today?

God’s covenant love has compelled me to do some pretty wild things, but that’s what Comfortable Being Uncomfortable really looks like: living interruptible, loving the unlovable, owning mistakes, seeking forgiveness, taking the lesser roles, helping others lead, choosing generosity, and spreading contagious joy and peace!

We need not fear exclusive commitment to this God. We will not always understand Him, but we can commit exclusively to Him without fear. All He is and all He will do is far greater and more perfect than anything we can conjure on our own. This is a promise and a reality in Jesus Christ.

Where is He calling you to grow today? Put your whole heart, soul, mind, and strength into His infinitely greater hands. Take the leap. You will never regret His love.
