“What happened to beast-mode Britney?”. The question posed from a spin class regular several years ago had me perplexed on the spot. Before I could think, I gave a quick high-five and giggly blurted out “JESUS!” in the middle of a secular cycle studio.
But as I left, even I was bumfuzzled at my response. I’d been wearing “Christian” since age nine and immersed in the fitness industry since 2011, so why now would Christ be the answer?
I soon realized it was much deeper, and the realistic response was: “DISCIPLESHIP” -or- “Beast mode was just a mask for the control I wanted over my life before I realized my purpose is to disciple others to give their whole being to the Kingdom of God.”
Hear me, I’ve always wanted everyone to love Jesus. But for years I thought that looked like a tall platform or overseas missions.
Reality: I tried both and that resulted in believers, but rarely cultivated Kingdom discipleship.
“You can believe all you want that there is one true God, that’s wonderful! But even the demons know this and tremble with fear before him, yet they’re unchanged and remain demons.” (James 2:19 TPT)
But continually Jesus called his followers, “disciples” (Matthew 4:19). He directed that title to people from every nation (Matthew 28:16-20).
So maybe you’re like me, and God hasn’t called you to deliver weekly sermons to the masses. What do you do with this counter-cultural revelation, this Good News?
Disciple the one.
Here are a few simple tips I use daily to disciple the person standing in front of me, whether it be with a training client, Kingdom sister, or inner-city mentee.
All disciples need:
1. To learn or be reminded of our purpose and potential (Jeremiah 29:11)
The enemy’s top job is to accuse us of an identity never intended for us. His name even translates ‘accuser’. So, if we’re feeling accused, we know where that stems and it’s not our gentle Papa. His Word gives us thousands of truthful declarations that teach and remind us who we are. He lives within us and we physically dwell in the authority to speak that Truth to everyone.
2. A reminder to breathe (Job 32:8)
Breathe out the lies you’ve believed in the past and breathe in the Truth he longs to marinate in your heart. Sometimes that means practicing breath prayer. Sometimes it’s embracing a forever family member as they exhale the hardships of a season.
3. We never have to navigate alone (Galatians 6:2; Proverbs 27:17)
Here’s some wisdom from Hobby Lobby: “we may not have it all together, but together we have it all”. God never said we wouldn’t be broken. He promised we would be. But He also promised if we grasped the heavy load together, we would fulfill His will and He’ll release eternal blessing upon us.
In the comments below, share about a person who has discipled you. How have they impacted your life?
Britney lives on mission in Huntsville, Alabama recklessly reclaiming bodies for the Kingdom. Her and her husband, Josh (both Platoon 19 ambassadors) love creating community spaces that celebrate every individual body for the freedom of its original design. Some days look like personal training and group fitness, and some days look like inner-city kids and marriage conferences.
