Our kind King is risen! An Easter Sunday Devotional

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday

This is a devotional for you and your family to use on Easter Sunday. We will rejoice at His resurrection and see Him as our Kind King.

We will read Scripture, reflect on Jesus’ kindness, reflect on our own hearts, and receive suggestions for putting our minds and bodies in a place where we can celebrate the risen Christ!

Read:

Luke 24, John 21:15-17, & 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Reflect:

Jesus, who was bloodied and dead in the tomb, is risen! He is risen indeed! The scars of His crucifixion are still plain on his skin, but there is breath in His lungs and blood pumping through His veins.

In His death, we were tempted to believe that death and darkness overcame the Creator of the world. Even now, we may be tempted to believe that this virus will overcome us — our economy, our families, our jobs, our homes, our health, and more. These threats are as real as Jesus’ crucifixion.

But our Kind King is risen indeed. In the most mysterious reality, He ascended into heaven with the same flesh and bone that the disciples touched the day He appeared to them in Jerusalem. Jesus, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is within us, around us, before us, and behind us. We do not have to be afraid.

By His passion, death, and resurrection, we are made new. While once we were fighting a losing battle against sin, in Christ, there is victory over sin, death, and dysfunction now and in the world to come– and that changes everything. Our hearts of stone are transformed into hearts of flesh because we are not slaves to sin. As forgiven and free people, we can follow Jesus in His humble humanity.

Our kind king makes us new in His image so we can be kind too. We can feed others from our stockpiles of beans and rice. We can trust that God will do something good in the midst of this pandemic. We can trust that He will be our refuge in the midst of our suffering. We can even forgive others, just as our Jesus forgives us. Finally, we can partner with Jesus in bringing dead things to life — from relationships to gardens to patients to faith. “For God has put everything under his feet” (1 Corinthians 15:27).

Our Kind King is risen indeed. Let us weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice, but let us all keep our hope in the risen Christ!

Psalms We Say Together:

If you are doing this devotional with more than one person, choose one person to lead the Psalm reading with the first astricked * verse, then the group can follow with the bolded verse.

PSALM 118:14-24

The Lord is my strength and my song, *

and he has become my salvation.

There is a sound of exultation and victory *

in the tents of the righteous:

“The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! *

the right hand of the Lord is exalted!

the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!”

I shall not die, but live, *

and declare the works of the Lord.

The Lord has punished me sorely, *

but he did not hand me over to death.

Open for me the gates of righteousness; *

I will enter them;

I will offer thanks to the Lord.

“This is the gate of the Lord; *

he who is righteous may enter.”

I will give thanks to you, for you answered me *

and have become my salvation.

The same stone which the builders rejected *

has become the chief cornerstone.

This is the Lord’s doing, *

and it is marvelous in our eyes.

On this day the Lord has acted; *

we will rejoice and be glad in it.

  1. I enjoyed this easter devotional so very much!
The part that spoke to me the most from this story of Jesus on the road to Emmaus was when the two followers broke bread with Jesus. After they had the bread, and were able to recognize Jesus, he disappeared. Then they both spoke to each about when they were all walking together and if felt like burning within them when jesus talked with them and explained scripture to them. 🙂

Praise the Lord for this scripture today!

  2. God bless you for sharing this Resurrection joy! I listened to the audio version of the scriptures on my bible app (niv version) I mirrored it on my tv screen. After that I read the psalm out loud. Thank you again and god Bless!
