How reflection can be the key to meeting your goals this year.

It’s that time again! After days of cookies, movies, and too much time on the couch, you’re ready to start or restart some healthy habits.
If you’ve been on this New Year’s healthy habits path before, you’ve likely experienced the start/stop cycle. You know?
You faithfully follow a workout routine for a few weeks, then something happens, and you stop. Maybe you get sick or your day fills up, and you miss your usual workout time. Pretty soon, days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into months.
At that point, you wonder how to begin again. You wonder how you’ll ever avoid that pattern the next time.
The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
Proverbs 27:12 (NIV)
Friend, this pattern, this stop/start cycle is normal. Behavior change is hard.
You can’t expect perfection. But, you need to know how to stick to your goals or habits even when you face challenges and obstacles.
The key to getting back up after you fall down is your awareness or mindfulness.
This is the discipline of noticing and naming when and why things are going right or going wrong.
Ultimately, you can’t change what you aren’t aware of.
If you want to maintain your healthy habits, you have to bring everything to the light. Become aware of the challenges, so you can work with them or work through them to overcome them.
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Proverbs 27:12 (NIV)
We don’t want to suffer the consequences of not knowing the dangers or obstacles that are coming and not being prepared to work through them.
Let’s reflect and observe our lives to finally make healthy habits that stick!
2 Minute Healthy Habit Teaching
Healthy Habit Mindfulness Journaling Activity
Spend 5-10 minutes each evening answering these questions to increase your mindfulness about your daily habits:
1. What went well today? What worked?
2. Why did it work? Why did it go well?
3. What didn’t work today? What didn’t go well today?
4. Why didn’t it work? Why didn’t it go well?
5. What can I do differently tomorrow?
Try this activity for a week and share your experience in the comments!
