Only this will quench your thirst

Only this will quench your thirst

When was the last time you felt full? Was it after a really great meal, a really great day, or maybe a really great conversation? Fullness can come and go pretty easily, especially in our bodies. Even after a big meal, when you think you’ll never be hungry again, in a few hours, sure enough, hunger comes knocking! And even the fullness of a great day or a great relationship can vanish pretty easily once things start going wrong.

The basis of our health lies in what we fill ourselves with. Physically, the food we eat and how we exercise will determine our health. Mentally and spiritually, we can be filled with lies and condemnation or with truth and grace. We get to choose each day not only what we fill our bodies with, but also what we fill our minds with through what we read, what we listen to, and who we spend time with.

Colossians 2:8-9 says, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.  For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness.

Fullness. The definition is “the state of being filled to capacity”. We all long to experience the fullness of life. So we try and fill ourselves with what we think will bring us life — whether it is through food, a certain body shape or fitness level, some amount of money, some promotion, or in certain relationships. We run after those things and get caught up in the world’s definition of fullness. We can find ourselves captive to hollow and deceptive philosophy.

The world does not have the answer to fullness. I do not have the answer to fullness, and neither do you. Christ has the answer to fullness. Only in Him am I full.

Fullness of life comes when my life, my worth, my purpose, and every day decisions are rooted in Christ.  He is the answer, He is what satisfies, and He is what brings me worth.

He is the way, and it’s not a “quick fix” way. It’s the narrow path. The little way. It’s an invitation into a new way, into a relationship with the living God. It will be scary to let go of control, but it will be the greatest adventure you will ever experience.  It will require suffering, surrender, and slowing down, but you won’t be alone, and you’ll never be left empty. Unlike the paths of the world, you’ll find no condemnation here. God Himself will take you by the hand and speak words of love, reminding you that His mercies are new every morning, and that the abundant life is found in following Him.

And it starts today, with your surrender and obedience. I challenge you to take a step today to fill  your body, mind, and spirit with the things God desires for you. The places we feel empty are the places where we have been believing hollow lies and doing things our own way. God wants to fill those places with the fullness that only He can give. Have you asked the Lord what He wants for you?  What do you want to be full of a year from now? Start with a small step today.

We have so many choices we can make in a day. Start with 10 minutes to sweat, one more glass of water, reaching for some nuts and fruit. Start with slowing down to hear what God may be speaking. Take a step. Go the little way.
