What does it mean to Rev? To many, it means to move your body in worship, but it is so much more than that.
To me, “Reving” is a way of life. Reving is a deliberate action to look for God all around me– in my exercise, my interactions with others, and in my work. Alisa Keeton, founder of Revelation Wellness, explains Reving at work this way “being a source of life and encouragement in your workplace.”
As a Christ-following public school teacher, I cannot speak directly about my faith in Christ, but at the same time, I am called to be true to my heart and my faith. Despite these obstacles, here are 4 ways I “Rev” and use Revelation Wellness Instructor Training in my job.
1.I put reminders all around me. My classroom is decorated in Revelation Wellness colors (orange and teal), I wear my Love>fear bracelet daily, and I have reminders hanging up, in my personal space, of whose I am and why I am there.
2. I get still. As the school (work) day moves on, I often find myself struggling to remember to pause and reset as needed. Sometimes, I believe my need to be still is a sign of weakness. In reality, by pausing and resetting, I set myself up to be a better teacher, friend, co-worker, etc. When life (aka work) brings chaos, I make a conscious effort to stop, breathe in and out and find peace in the midst of the storm (and if needed, I bring my students along on that reset with me).
3. I get moving. Everyday, I make time to take a break, put on some music, and move.
A “Harvard Health” blog from 2016 says it this way, “Your mind and body are intimately connected. And while your brain is the master control system for your body’s movement, the way you move can also affect the way you think and feel.”
“Psychology Today” posted an article from 2017 that tells us that “’Movement breaks’ are essential for your physical and emotional health. The benefits of taking brief movement breaks have been well-researched. Constant sitting—whether at your desk, the TV, or the lecture hall—puts you at higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity. Getting up from your chair to walk, stretch, do yoga, or whatever activity you prefer can reduce the negative health effects from too much sitting.”
We are not designed to sit for hours on end. So my class takes dance breaks! I’ve taught my class a couple drumstick and basic kickboxing routines using fun and energetic songs they know and which speak life into them.
When in doubt, get up and move, move, move!
4. This is probably the most important one of all- I remember who I am working for! Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV) says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Even as a public school teacher I have daily opportunities to live for the Lord in my actions and my words.
I pray these ideas are a catalyst to seek Christ in all things and at all times. I hope these four ways help you realize that it doesn’t matter where you are, or what you do, you have the ability to Rev!
