“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” -1 Timothy 4:8
I train not only to strengthen my physical body, but also my heart, soul, and mind to stand firm in the faith. Years ago, a good day was defined by how much I weighed. This shifted when I started focusing on God’s Word and what He says about who I am. I stopped seeing myself as a number on a scale and started seeing myself as a unique creation of Christ. Working out was no longer a punishment for overeating or trying to get to that perfect weight. It was now about how movement and walking with God was holy. Physical training became about health and holiness, not a perfect body. Physical movement for me now is my “get to,” and I look at it with Joy rather than a “have to.”
I walk along ponds in my neighborhood daily to meet with God. It’s those moments with my physical training and my heart training overflow into my life. It’s a joy now to work out or go on a walk. I want to be able to play with my grandchildren someday.
For me, walking, running around the yard with my 5-year-old is my why. It’s not about how skinny, or what the scale says about me. It’s about being able to run and laugh with them in the front yard. It’s not about me being happy, but being holy.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim freedom for the captives, release from prison those who are bound, and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn. – Isaiah 61:1
I look at how far I have come from a woman coming out of an abusive marriage of 16 years who didn’t even know who she was and believed she was never good enough, to a woman remarried with four amazing kids and running a ministry that makes her heart overflow. This overflow comes from knowing my worth is in Christ. That the scale no longer holds my happiness or my unhappiness.
This year alone, God has stretched me in so many ways. I’ve opened a Christ-Centered residential home to serve women and girls coming from sex-trafficking, addiction, abuse, abandonment, and many more desperate situations. I also went through Revelation Wellness Instructor training, and I am now starting to write my story.
I teach weekly Revfit classes in the Grace Multiplied ministry house and a girl’s home, Carpenter Place, in Wichita, KS. Grace Multiplied is a residential discipleship home for women 18+ coming out of abuse, addiction or sex trafficking. We provide a home and services to restore hope to the hopeless and light to the darkness. We teach life skills and help them find their worth in Christ through discipleship and Christian counseling. We desire to show these women and girls that He can transform their lives.
If you are struggling with who you are, remember that God knew you before you were in the womb. He knows every hair on your head. You are invited to participate in Kingdom work. Today, know that physical training prepares you to do the work of heavy love with Christ right beside you. To move is to let God move you wherever He wants. Hold your plans loosely and let God do the rest.
Rebecca Billups lives in Kansas with her husband, four kids -Hunter (19), Addison (17), Dylan (14), and Ava (5) and three dogs. She founded and runs a residential discipleship home (Grace Multiplied) for women coming out of unthinkable circumstances to teach them life skills and teach them that their foundation is built on Jesus Christ.
