Several times a year I invite people in my community to join me to train for a 5k (3.1 mile) race. On Saturday mornings we gather for a short warm-up, then some people walk and others run. I’ve been blessed to meet many nice people, but Mr. Phillip inspires me the most. He’s more than twice my age and doesn’t walk or run. Yet, he’s an essential member of our group!
Mr. Phillip is a former crime scene photographer with years of experience and wisdom. He moves around the park where we’re training in his motorized wheelchair and/or car. He photographs moments from our group’s sessions, then creates ‘Finisher Certificates’ for every participant. He brings humor and joy to our workouts. He always thanks me for allowing him to be a part our community, but he’s truly a gift to us all.
As Revelation Wellness® instructors and leaders, we called to LOVE GOD and LOVE PEOPLE of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. We understand it’s NOT about the fitness. We’re creating a safe place for people to worship our heavenly Father with their hearts and bodies.
Mr. Phillip may not able to walk or run, but he still has something valuable to offer to others. According to 1 Peter 4:10-11NIV, all gifts are God-given and should be used to bring Him glory and praise!
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
As you continue growing your classes, I hope you’ll find these five tips useful in building lasting and life-giving relationships.
CONNECTIONS BUILD COMMUNITY
- Let Relationships Happen Naturally: The leader’s role is to facilitate connections between people in their group(s), but don’t force relationships to happen. Just make the introductions and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.
- Speak Up and Smile: When speaking with people of varying ages, it’s important to speak with boldness and make eye contact. Remember to wear your smile, it’s the universal symbol of kindness.
- Get to Know Them: Learn a couple of interesting facts about each person in your group. They will feel valued because you made the effort to get to know them on a personal level.
- Willing to Share: Once you’ve created meaningful connections, ask members to share skills and/or talents to contribute to the group’s success.
- Follow-Up: Send a quick email or text a couple of days after your class and/or event to follow-up with participants. This is a great time to ask about their experience and any feedback they may have to share with you.
Whether you’re leading a group of two or 20, remember every relationship in your community matters.

Check out this testimony from Natalie A. about her experience in the Sugar Fast:
“I have been overweight most of my life. I’ve been on many diets. I’ve failed many diets BUT accepted that this was a fast & my gaze was set on God which is what made this experience different. Even compared to other RevWell challenges, this one was much different. My idols – sugar & carbs (my comforts) were removed and I finally felt EMPTY in the best way imaginable. I didn’t crave or want the food because my craving for Jesus was bigger. I finally realized it’s okay to feel empty & not hungry, if that makes any sense at all. Strange feeling to describe. This is breakthrough. This is revolutionary & life-changing — for me, my husband & family. Clearing out my closet has made room for my royal robes!”
