Finding God in Chaos

COVID 19

Just a few weeks ago most of us hardly heard of Coronavirus. Now most of us are sitting at home looking out at a world infected by the Coronavirus, and we barely recognize what we see. There has never been a time in our recent history where so many of us are focused on the same thing at the same time. There is barely a corner of this world where you could go right now where everyone isn’t thinking about this virus.

Jesus, you have our undivided attention! What would you like to say?

I imagine that He has much to say to our hearts right now and more to teach us. I imagine He wants to see us draw near to Him and one another. I imagine that He would desire to see us grieve with each other and help the hurting as we are able. I imagine that He wants us to teach our children about fear, compassion, responsibility, and love. I imagine there are many things He is saying to us through this situation.

Thankfully, we have a lot of time to be still and listen to Him.

In any catastrophe, people ask, “Why would a good God let this happen? What sort of God would create a world where such a screwed up virus would exist?”

This is a natural question, but it might not be the most helpful question. If you evaluate God from this question, your line of thinking will lead straight to hell. Not the hell I learned about in Sunday School, but the kind of hell that lives here in this world and in this life. If you let that question soak into your body and soul it takes you to a life of inevitable suffering that is void of meaning. You become Cain instead of Abel. Like Cain, you become someone with a low view of God with no sight to see His mercy and truth. This question reveals more about your heart than God’s heart.

Rather than take the path of shaking our collective fists at God over this pandemic, we can posture ourselves differently. We can see God rightly and allow Him to guide us through this complicated season.

ARK BUILDERS

During the chaos created by this virus, I believe God is asking us to be thoughtful, active, and obedient Ark Builders. Ark Builders are the steady, solid, and faithful people everyone else can count on. When chaos comes these Ark Builders usher everyone else inside where they can ride out the flood. They protect, encourage, serve, and remind everyone of the hope of Christ.

An ark is the evidence of redemption in our lives. The floods will come. Floods are guaranteed and cannot be avoided. Since the Fall, humanity, and creation itself, has experienced “floods” of all kinds. These floods look like injustice, natural disasters, disappointments, broken families, and this COVID-19 Pandemic. But in Jesus, we are made new. He is our Ark and He asks us to partner with Him in sharing this Good News with others — this is our responsibility and delight. The fact that you have read this far is evidence that you take the responsibility of being an Ark Builder and teaching at the Ark Building Academies.

I encourage you to during this time of “global flood” to quiet your heart before the Lord and listen to the ark building advice he has for humanity right now. I encourage you to soak in that time of reflection and grab hold of all of this. You are the ark builders, the flood survivors of these generations.

This is a flood, a big flood. Mothers, fathers and, grandparents are dying, fear and anxiety are attacking hundreds of millions of people’s bodies around the world, businesses will fail, jobs will be lost, many children are losing the security of a school environment for chaotic and unhealthy homes. The list of harm this virus carries with it is almost endless in its breadth.  This flood is all too real and all too severe. We have hope in Jesus and we hold the responsibility to bring His hope to those around us. We are equipped and we are ready.

As you continue to build arks through this season, here is a prayer you can repeat often:

The Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
