A rhythm is a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound. Grace is the free and unmerited favor of God that transforms believers into Christ’s likeness. Rhythms of grace can be described as habits that emerge from God’s grace upon us and that helps us move in alignment with God’s redemptive work in the world.
So what do rhythms of grace look like for me? Recently, I recognize my “rhythms of grace” when I consider my response to the question in the Revelation Wellness food journal, “What is God teaching me?”.
The journal prompts and spaces allow me to reflect on questions like What was the passage God highlighted for me that day? How did I eat? Did I move my body? Have I spent quiet time with the Lord? In reflection, I can see if my food choices were stellar. I can also see if my food choices were less than stellar depending on the day, week, or season. In the first, I can find myself tip-toeing into pride, and on the other end of the spectrum, I can find myself potentially feeling shame.
Could this not apply to our habits and rhythms of living a life fully surrendered to Christ’s will for us?
How do we check ourselves to know if we are living in that intentional and purposeful place that draws us into a life lived WITH Christ?
Here are five tips to live with a God-first purpose:
1. Get into His presence.
Listen to a Be Still & Be Loved. Quiet your mind and sit in silence or play some worship music.
2. Renew your mind.
Read your Bible. Recognize your best way of learning: audio, visual, kinetic and use it to your advantage. Explore the vast array of apps that are available today to study the Bible or memorize the Word. Two of my favorites are the YouVersion app and the BlueLetterBible app.
3. Find a battle buddy and set alarms.
A battle buddy is someone who will lift you up in prayer, call you out, and pull you up out of the muck and mire. If you don’t have a friend like this, ask God to bring one into your life. I prayed many years for such a friend and now am blessed with a few. Along with a battle buddy, use alarms on your phone to remind you to pause and be present, or pause and pray, or pause and reset your mind.
4. Let the music remind you.
Create music playlists that speak to your season of life or different scenarios or words. For example, I create a playlist around my word for the year to remind me what God wants me to focus on. Create an identity playlist to sing TRUTH over you. Create word art reminders. Create post-it reminders of Bible Verses around your home, in your car, and your workplace. Be creative!
5. Evangelize and exhort.
Revelation teaches us that we overcome by the word of our testimony. Preach to yourself. Encourage others. Through these activities may we be encouraged to continue to press on and also be refined through experience. Experience the rhythms of grace by continually Getting Real About Challenging Experiences.
Today, I pray that you may be empowered by the all-sufficient grace of God that sent His Son to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our sinful nature. May you discover healthy rhythms to have God first, so that you may continually be getting healthier, to be whole, and love others well for the glory of God in Jesus’s mighty name. Amen.
I’m cheering you on and believing big for God to move in and through you!
