How to switch to natural deodorant

switch to natural deodorant

Natural deodorant is becoming more mainstream, which means you might be considering making the switch to a cleaner alternative to keep things smelling fresh all day! When I first decided to make the switch to natural deodorant after doing some research on the benefits of cleaning up my beauty products, I had NO idea where to start, so I grabbed the first one I saw at Target, and here’s what happened: insane amounts of sweat, a not-so-fresh smell a few hours in, and a nasty rash within a few days.

So, let me help you avoid these symptoms if you want to make the switch!

One of the most important things to know when switching from conventional antiperspirant to natural deodorant is that natural deodorant doesn’t contain aluminum, which prevents the sweat factor in antiperspirants – so you will still sweat in your underarms if you make the switch.

I PROMISE you will get used to it (and I live in Atlanta so it is h-o-t!!!), and your body may even adjust once you get through the detox period after making the switch! I often see comments from people saying “it keeps me smelling fresh, but I am still sweating!”, well, because you are supposed to! Sweat is your body’s way of eliminating toxins and regulating temperature – so when we use a standard antiperspirant, we are blocking our body from doing what God so beautifully designed it to do!

If you are ready to give it a whirl, here are my tips:

1.Be ready for trial and error. What works for me (or a friend of yours) might not work for you! (I’ll share my favorite below after about a year of trial and error)

2. If you develop a rash or experience itching, you likely need to look for a brand that does not contain baking soda. This is a very normal reaction for a lot of people using natural deodorant. STOP using it right away and give your pits a chance to heal.

3. If you find you are sweating more than usual, the oil base of your deodorant may be causing this! While I loved the smell of the deodorants from Primally Pure, I found that I would start sweating immediately from the thick oil base. (and let me tell you, white sweat beads rolling from your armpits during a workout is not the cutest look!)

4. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! 😉 It might take a few brands until you find the one you LOVE! I never imagine myself loving natural deodorant, and now I will never go back!

5. If you order online, check the return policy. Many brands have a 30-day money back guarantee and don’t hesitate to send it back if it doesn’t work for you or causes irritation.

6. Whatever brand you use, do a little research on the detox period (most brands talk about it on their website). Your body will need time to push out the chemicals from years of antiperspirants, but I promise after you get through the detox period, things will start looking up.

My personal favorite is LUME, it does not leave me irritated, keeps me smelling fresh all day (even after outdoor workouts in Atlanta heat!!), and leaves me less sweaty than the other brands I have tried. I personally use the tube as it lasts longer (a tube lasts me 3-4 months).

  1. I made the switch a few years ago. After years of infertility and some information from EWG about products causing hormone imbalances, I started looking at a lot of my skin products (EWG has a healthy living app that helps tell you ratings for products). I switched to Toms. I had some success but it didn’t last all day and sometimes i still sweat a lot. I tried the crystal mineral stick from the local coop, which didn’t work well for me. Then I ordered Native and I’ve been using that for over a year and I’ve found that even some of the scents work differently on me. So I ordered a sample pack and tried a number of them to see what worked well. Most of the time it keeps me pretty dry in daily activities and I don’t have too much smell but I might try a few more brands that have come Out reCenTly.

    1. Thank you for sharing, Karen! You are a wealth of information. I’ve tried a few natural deodorant brands also. I’m using a charcoal based stick from Primal.

  2. I made the switch about 5 years ago. I used Primal Pit Paste for years. I did break out during the detox period, but have never had that happen since then. Ppp changeD things up recently and I just wasn’t feeling frEsh any more. I switched to Schmidts and have felt freSh all day! The men in my house use Schmidts too and also find it to work great!

    1. Cool! I’m using Primal Pit Paste right now and I think it’s working, but I may have to try Schmidts!

    Women asking me about this.

  4. Thank you for all the information. I have been using Doterra essential oil infusEd natural deodorant gentle formula. The Fragrance is douglas fir and Greek orange. Ive also Used their regular formula with groundinG blend oils. Love them both!!!!!!

  5. I started using Native this pAst year and am really liking It. I still sweAt now and AGAIN BUT i don’t smell

  6. I tried lots of brands before a friend told Me about native. Im a very sweaty person, and native works beautifuLly, even in the humid Houston summers!

  7. I also made the switch a few years ago after having thyroid cancer, then my dad having it and being reminded of the history of breast cancer in my family. Just decided that enough was enough as far as my lifestyle choices that were proven to increase my risk of disease. I tried a few, Truly’s was my favorite. The ones using charcoal left me feeling sticky. I also am not a heavy sweater though, so I’m actually able to make my own homemade knock off of Truly’s and it works for me! Along with using a wash rag to really scrub in the shower. I found that it is key to make sure you are removing the dirt and dead skin cells to stay fresh!

  8. Love this idea of Rev Tips & natural deodorant is a great topic! I also switched a couple years ago. Started with Native and loved it but about six months in the baking soDa got me and i had a rash to heal from. My Doctor recommended trying the crystals roll on that he uses. I love it! It’s very inexpensive at only $3.50 and since a little bit goes a long way it lasts a long time, plus it’s easy to Find in most stores. Best part….no more rash! Oh and my laundry got easier because i’m not battling Any more sweat stains on my shirts that the aluminum leaves.

  9. I made the switch a couple of years ago. For years I could not find a deoderant/antipersperant that would actually work for me. I started using essential oils and learned how harmful they were. I found a recipe to make my own. It includes baking soda, cornstarch, and coconut oil. Along with a few drops of essential oils. I was amazed at how it worked better than any store bought product.

    1. That’s awesome, Cindy! I know it is best to put essential oils on your skin with a carrier oil. Thanks for the ideas!

  10. This is very helpful and greatly appreciated. I will make the change. I started years ago and the sweat was so uncomfortable I went back to regular deodorant but you ladies have given me HOPe and new options. . Thank you.
