What is greater than knowledge?

What is greater than knowledge?

fasting

I convinced myself that if I had more knowledge, then I would be able to do the best self-diagnosis I could. I told myself that if I could retain more knowledge about this dis-ease or symptom in my body then I would have what I needed to heal (emotionally/spiritually/physically) myself.

I read all the books. I bought courses online. I followed people who were sharing about what I so desperately want to be free from. I was so consumed with what knowledge could possibly provide for me that I forgot about the complete and whole nature of the Father.

It’s easy for us to become knowledge junkies isn’t it? It can fuel our flesh to desire more of what this world can provide for us versus what Jesus already provided.

Knowledge likes to say things like, “What do I need to know to be able to do all the right things so that I can make this work for me just like I see it working for everyone else.”

Can the knowledge I seek tell me exactly what I need to eat all the time to solve this problem I have with weight loss? My healing?

Knowledge is good to have but what we do with knowledge matters the most.

Let’s take a quick look at the difference between knowledge and wisdom based on Google’s definition.

Knowledge is the accumulation of facts and data that you have learned about or experienced. Knowledge is really about facts and ideas that we acquire through study, research, investigation, observation, or experience.

Wisdom is the ability to discern and judge which aspects of that knowledge are true, right, lasting, and applicable to your life. It’s the ability to apply that knowledge to the greater scheme of life and what it means to your life.

Which leads us right into Proverbs 3:17-18

“Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who retain her.”

Who is she? She is wisdom. Wisdom’s ways are pleasant and peaceful. Wisdom is a tree of life. It is good to attain knowledge about the things we do and the world around us. But, knowledge shouldn’t be where we stop. We should pursue wisdom with the knowledge we have.

Wisdom may look like asking the Lord, “Father, I know what other people say about what this food can do for my body or to my body BUT how does this food affect me? Am I staying true to freedom and discipline defined by You, or am I following the rules set by others? Given what I know about this food/product/drink, how does this apply to me, my life, and the current season I am in?”

Proverbs 3:17-18 reminds us that wisdom provides life, peace, and happiness (joy).

When our focus shifts from weight-loss to feeling better, then our goal is no longer about our outward appearance but about the posture of our heart towards the good body God has given us.

Does the food in front of you bring life to your body and bones?

Are you pursuing peace with what the Lord provides?

Are you pursuing joy with the knowledge you have as you discern how it applies to your life and body?

When I view my accumulated knowledge about food and health through God’s Word, the enemy can not bully me into believing that obsession or neglect is the only way to live. God’s Word shows me how me to discern what is true and right for me. But attaining this wisdom takes time and some effort on my part. Am I willing to “eat” God’s Word and change my views about health and food?

God’s word has to be what you believe first and most, before any other tip, diet, or protocol is considered. He’s the ultimate Helper and Healer. Now, let’s make time for Him to teach us.

What do I know about God from His Word?

How has sin distorted the way I view my body?

What is God saying about my body?

How has sin distorted the way I eat and drink?

What is God saying about my healing?

What might a restored body image and relationship to food look like?

What is God saying to me about my thoughts and emotions?

Say this prayer with me, “Father, show me the areas of my heart that need addressed. Show me how to take what I know and apply it to my life with no fear. Let my heart align with yours so that I can pursue wisdom with food and my body.”

Now I pass these questions onto you. Read through this blog post again and answer each question for yourself. You may come back to these questions often; that is a good thing. Let’s be humble like Solomon, asking for wisdom from the Lord:

“I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:7-9

He will surely answer our prayer.

    1. Yes! And your body can tell you a lot of things, and you can learn so much to treat your body well. But, wisdom comes through spending time with the Lord and lots of discernment. Answers aren’t always clear!

  5. This has been me for so long. I have read, researched and pursued the answer to weight loss. HOWEVER I have never been successful because I am unable to sustain it for longterm. I wasn’t doing it God’s way I was doing it my way. Now I am leaning less on my knowledge and seeking HIM FOR THE WISDOM only HE CAN PROVIDE. Thank you for sharing and giving me this perspective.

    1. Yes, Vanessa! And this knowledge is GOOD! But we need direction for what to do with our knowledge and seek the Lord’s perspective.

  6. Back in augus 9th, 2019, i heard god’s voice saying OUT LOUD: “it’s a consi of the heart ♥️. Your blog today shows me what he meant by that!!!
    Thank u for sharinG

  7. Jessica, spot on!! I BELIEVE this is EXACTLY what Alisa and Dr. janA have been repeatedly trYing to get across. Prayers that we might all have ears to hear❣️thank you for SHARING your wisdom so ELOQUENTLY!

  8. Thank you Jess . I’ve been praying for knowledge that God has already given me . What I needed to pray for was wisdom .
Glad I decided to be still for a moment and read this.

    1. I’m praying with you, Maxine! He has given us a good brain to learn many things, but we also need His wisdom! Thankfully, we are in community with so many wise people here!

  9. Oh my gosh! God used you this morning Jessica. I am praying about launching a new Christian fitness website/platform (supporting rev well along the way) and am getting overwhelmed by attaining technical knowledge. You have reminded me that my father has all the answers. Psalm 32 tells me he will guide me with his eyes. Thank you for sharing truth!

    1. Thank you for reading, Judi! You’re doing good work, and just because it is difficult (and highly technical) doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path!

  10. this blog has really helped open my eyes to the fact that I have been more consumed with knowledge than wisdom. i am more focused on food than i am on god! this changes now!! if i choose to focus on god, then he will give me wisdom. he will lead me and guide me as to what food choices i should make and help me not to obsess over food! thank you for sharing this blog ! and thank you jesus for all your many blessings!!!

  11. Jessica! YES!!!!! i am so right there with you! This has been a journey for the Lord and me, not to make an idol out of information, not to let my knowledge dictate my perspective. It has served as a great blessing as *A TOOL* to utilize as i pursue health and wholeness. But i have for sure had to wrestle knowledge down to it’s place, submitted to the wisdom and nature of God.
High FIVE! THANK YOU for sharing this much-needed perspective – esp for the recovering info junkies like myself.

  12. love this fast. God has been gracious in helping me to bind my flesh and resist the devil in tempting me to eat sugar, which has been a serious weakness. its been my comfort, my go to. I am praying that the lord, leads my eating and draws me to what he wants me to eat.

thanks for all that each of you have done to guide us through this fast.

  13. I feel panic rise up when i get asked questions, even when none of you will hear my answers. A Fear of getting the answers wrong. Call it pride, or people-pleasing, but it is obviously not from god. THis time i am turning the questions back to him. Lord, what are you telling me about my body? My healing? My emotions & thoughts? I’m on Day 3 sugarfast. Lord, Bind my flesh, my thoughts, my emotions and my pride.

  14. I know that true knowledge, that which comes from the Lord, is the answer to all of life’s questions, so thank you for the reminder. I especially like the emphasis of asking for wisdom in the application of all the great ideas and foods available. Asking God if those are right for me. That is a very freeing focus! God knows what I need and when I ask Him for guidance, He will reveal what is best and then give me what I need to successfully obey therefore I don’t have to worry about if I can do everything that everyone else is doing but only what He wants me to do.
    Thank you!

  15. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. I lOve see how god blesses each of us as we seek to honor him with our food choices

  16. This just confirmed I am in exactly the right place. I had recently decided I was sick and tired of listening to everything that bombarded me regarding health and fitness – especially because there is so much conflicting and contradicting information and messages and they ALL think and say they are right! I can trust god to show me the truth for me! And you at Rev. Wellness provide inf o and support and most of all just keep pointing me to him.

  17. Another amazing blog post! Im so encouraged by the wisdom in these DEVOTIONALS and especially the 1kings scripture! I am seeking the lord for wisdom in how to launch a healthy “fast-food” juice & lunch cafe, which will include prayer and healthy living support. The Lord has already revealed so insight inot His simple ancient ways made to bless us with abundant life in all areas! This ministry is already BECOMING another answer to my prayers!!

    1. THank you so much for sharing, Cindy! Wow! That cafe sounds amazing! We are so glad you’re here with us at Revelation Wellness!

  18. this was definitely one I have to come back to and read over until it’s ingrained in my brain. there’s so much here. I definitely struggle with the battle between obsessing about food versus neglecting because it gets exhausting. The knowledge of how much our diet impacts health is what has led me into captivity. I keep thinking if I follow the right protocol, read my Bible, pray, have Faith, go to counseling and check off all the right things then healing will come. i’m constantly falling back in and trying to heal myself through the knowledge I gain. So thank tou for this wisdom.

  19. Im seeking tHe Lord for how to see my body along with how to heal from Adrenal Fatigue. Ive spent too much time on beauty and being unable to
Quit augar and im paying for it. Praying for a GRACE-FILLED perspectIVe and much wisdom.

  20. Such Spirit filled words! God is so good! I know that he created me for him. He loves me and has a good plan for me. I have not always been patient in waiting for that plan, instead trying to “help” God/ “fix it.”
God made me unique, and he sees me as beautiful. When I look to the world for approval all I see is “not good enough!,” “Not thin enough,” “not pretty enough.” Why do I allow these lies to form me? God help me to reject the world’s condemnation and the lies of my flesh and trust you and your word.
I have sinned and sought comfort in food, rather than in the arms of my Savior. Forgive me and give me a new heart that beats for you. Help me not to wander, but to be willing to walk the path you lay out for me.

  21. Funny how i just pulled this email up today as i have been preparing to teach A Bible stUdy on the wisdom of God and how we, as His image bearers can portray that wisdom. Ive been thinking lots about how knowledge puffs up…and knowledge is so preVAlent. We carry medical journals, dictionaries, ENCYCLOPEDIA, etc around in our pocket. The problem isn’t that we don’t know, its that we are not applying that knowledge to our life which is what makes us wise. God’s wisdom is foolishness to those that are perishing. This REV family…we look crazy to the world, but to God…He’s crazy about this mission of the heart posture we have! Thanks Jessica!
