Holy Week Meditations Devotional

Hello friends! We joyfully invite you to join us here at Revelation Wellness for the next four days for worship and study.

In this blog post, you will find readings and worship prompts for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Resurrection Sunday.

Every day will start with some information about that particular day of Holy week, followed by a Scripture reading for you to engage with, a worship statement, and a hymn that speaks to that day of Holy Week.

The worship statement, is exactly what it sounds like- a phrase for you to declare out loud as part of your reading. The statement can become a place for mediation and worship, a way to delve deeper. Please take a few minutes to repeat and sit with it, making it your own.

Finally, take a few minutes to listen to a hymn — glorious theology set to music. We have not listed every verse, just the first verse for each. We would encourage you to find the full hymn and either listen to it fully, sing along as you listen, or simply read each verse of the hymn in meditative worship without the music playing. It’s truly up to how you feel the Lord is asking you to engage.

The resurrection of Christ is the pinnacle of our faith, the crux of our hope, and the most glorious truth of the good news that we hold to as believers. Because He is RISEN, we have life, are freed from death, are no longer slaves to sin, and have access to all that heaven offers. We pray this week of meditation and worship renews your joy in His great salvation. Be blessed!

Table of Contents

Maundy Thursday

Maundy is from the Latin word Mandatum, which means commandment. Christ gave us His commandments to LOVE and SERVE one another on the eve of the greatest suffering any human could ever experience.

Reading: John 13:12- 17

“When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

Other Suggested reading: John 13-15

Worship Statement:

Jesus is WORTHY of my SERVICE and OBEDIENCE.

Hymn: “Come, Ye, Sinners, Poor and Needy” by Joseph Hart

“Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,

Weak and wounded, sick and sore!

Jesus ready stands to save you,

Full of pity, love and power.

He is able, HE is able, He is able,

He is willing, doubt no more!”

Good Friday

On Good Friday, Jesus was tried, condemned, beaten, mocked, spit on, abandoned and shamed FOR ME. He endured physical and emotional torment so that I might be FREE.

Reading: Hebrews 12:2-3

“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.”

Other suggested reading: John 18-19

Worship Statement:

Jesus is WORTHY of my WHOLE LIFE.

Hymn: “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross” by Isaac Watts

“When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Holy Saturday

Saturday was a day of waiting – because they couldn’t properly care for Jesus’ body before the Passover. His disciples were waiting for Sunday to properly bury Jesus. Little did they realize that while his physical body lay in the tomb, Jesus Christ paid the penalty for sin by offering the perfect, spotless sacrifice. He conquered death, both spiritually and physically, securing our eternal salvation.

Reading: 1 Peter 1:18-19

“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”

Other suggested readings: Psalm 27:14, Psalm 37:7, Prov. 3:5-6

Worship Statement:

Jesus is WORTHY of my WAITING with JOY.

Hymn: “Hallelujah! What a Savior!” by Philip P. Bliss

“Man of Sorrows!” what a name
For the Son of God, who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!”

Resurrection Sunday!

HE IS RISEN!!

Readings:

Luke 24:5-6: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee.”

John 11:25-26: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’”

Romans 8:11: “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

1 Cor. 15:3-4:  For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Worship Statement:

Jesus is WORTHY of all my WONDER and LOVE.

Hymn: “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” by Charles Wesley

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!
Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!”
