When your to-dos feel endless and your energy is quickly fading, you may be tempted to skip on preparing nutritious meals and snacks. But this is the time when your body needs it the most! Filling up on “fluff”, empty calories, will never satisfy. Our bodies need to be fueled with all the good foods of this earth (Genesis 1:29, 9:3) to sustain energy levels, mental clarity, immune health, and/or recovery. Do not believe the inner doubts of its “too much time” or “too much work” to eat well. You will reap whatever you sow.
When you care for your inner man with the Word of God and your physical body with nutrient-dense foods—you will be equipped to serve well, lead well and love well. We are instruments, not ornaments, of the All-Mighty God. We all have predestined purposes and assignments. Fueling ourselves well will ensure we grow stronger in our faith and body.
Here are five easy-to-follow tips and reminders to help you prepare and enjoy smoothies on the go:
1. Know your body's needs:
Do not be overwhelmed by the limitless choices of smoothie combinations. First, pray for discernment to understand what your individual nutritional needs are. Here are a few ideas to consider:
- Start by choosing fruits and greens you like best.
- Choose a liquid (i.e. coconut water or milk, plant-based milk, dairy milk, juice, etc.)
- Pick a healthy fat (i.e. Avocado, Plain and/or no-sugar added yogurt, nut butters)
- Seeds are a great source of fiber and protein (i.e. Flax, Hemp, Chia, etc.)
- Add a Grain (i.e. quinoa, millet, and oats)
2. Wash and chop in bulk.
Once you choose your smoothie recipe and ingredients, it is time to wash and chop. Place a dry napkin or cloth into your fruit carton or strainer to absorb excess moisture.
3. Sneak in those greens.
Smoothies are an excellent way to sneak more greens into your diet. They are high in fiber and packed full of minerals and vitamins. Spinach, Kale, and Bok Choy pair well with many fruits.
4. Freeze smoothie bags or jars.
Now you are ready to separate and store your ingredients into sealed, air-tight containers, like a small bag or jar. I recommend one bag or jar per smoothie serving. Be sure to include your fruit, chopped greens and seeds. (DO NOT add your yogurt and/liquids here.)
Store your bags or jars in the freezer or refrigerator to have on hand whenever you are ready to enjoy a smoothie. Thaw for 30-mins to one hour before you are ready to fuel up. A little preparation will go long way to save time later in the week!
5. Try smoothie cubes or bowls.
Skip the bags and/or jars by blending your smoothie ingredients and pouring them into ice trays. Store in your freezer. Once frozen, pop out a few cubes, add your liquids, and blend.
Don’t like to drink smoothies? Pour ingredients into a bowl and top with crunchy toppings or favorite fruits.
Remember:
- Choose Natural Sweeteners: Frozen bananas add natural sugar and smooth texture to any smoothie. Honey, coconut sugar and monk fruit are other excellent options.
- Be curious when exploring new flavor combos; you’ll never know until you try.
- Miss Chocolate? Sprinkle in cocoa powder to your favorite smoothie.
- Be aware of hidden sugars in protein powders to ensure your blood sugars are stabilized.
Prepare your body for the race ahead.
Whether you are a leader of your family, tribe or nation, your body needs a variety of nutrient-dense foods to accomplish the mission set before you by our Heavenly Father. When you are filled with the best foods for your needs, you are sure to have the energy, focus, and strength to persevere until the end.
“And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV
