This month, we learn how to move better, embrace challenge, and get stronger because love is heavy.
Key Points
We get to spread the love of Jesus through physical and mental health practices for a healthy and whole faith.
We do not always get to love others when things are light and easy, many times we are called to love others in conflict, through trauma, in sickness, and in need.
When Jesus died on the cross, He showed us how much He was willing to sacrifice for love.
We strengthen our muscles through functional training to prepare for the heavy moments in life that demand our time, attention, and faith.
We value their savior over striving, community over comparison, and quality of movement over quantity of movement.
We get stronger without losing our freedom.
Jesus showed us how to embrace challenges by keeping His eyes on His Father and His purpose.
In this season of Lent, we can meditate on Jesus willingness to bear the heavy cross because of His love for us.
We are willing to fast from pleasures and give generously to train ourselves in Christlikeness.
Scripture
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
“But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” Hebrews 2:9
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
“But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are.” Deuteronomy 4:20
“Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;” 2 Corinthians 6:4-5
“Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” Daniel 6:10
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” Matthew 23:37
Quotes
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities that may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. — Collect for the Second Sunday in Lent, Book of Common Prayer, 2019
Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the Cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen. — Prayer for Mission, Book of Common Prayer, 2019
“But God doesn’t call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn’t come through.” ― Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God
Holiness is what makes real love possible. Without it, love is purely sentimental. — Jackie Hill Perry, Holier Than Thou: How God’s Holiness Helps Us Trust Him
“When we learn to read the story of Jesus and see it as the story of the love of God, doing for us what we could not do for ourselves–that insight produces, again and again, a sense of astonished gratitude which is very near the heart of authentic Christian experience.” ― N.T. Wright
“Biblical meekness is never weakness. Rather, it is a harnessing of God-given strength.” ― Jess Connolly, Wild and Free: A Hope-Filled Anthem for the Woman Who Feels She is Both Too Much and Never Enough
“We were set up to love. To absorb the love of God into our bloodstream and then to share it with another human being.” ― John Mark Comer, Loveology: God. Love. Marriage. Sex. And the Never-Ending Story of Male and Female.
“I’d learned that you can’t wear a crown unless you bear a cross – that if our Savior had learned obedience through suffering, we should expect the same.” ― Joni Eareckson Tada, The God I Love: A Lifetime of Walking with Jesus
