Tired of the same routine? Take your workout outside!

Michele shares eight ideas for an effective and fun outdoor workout!

outdoor workout ideas

If you are new to fitness and just beginning a workout routine, it is helpful to keep it light and fun. There’s no better way to do that than to work out in the great outdoors.

Here are eight ways to get an effective workout outside of the gym and in your local park, neighborhood, or even your front yard:

1. Go for a walk

A simple walk around the neighborhood will get you moving at very little cost. All you need are a pair of good, comfortable walking shoes and a watch to keep track of the time to get started.

No more excuses. It is time to get up and get moving. 30 minutes is all you need to train your body, mind, and soul! Yes, your first step outside is a new adventure just waiting to happen!

2. Go for a bike ride

Get that bicycle ready, take it to your local bike shop for a tune-up, and pedal to your heart’s content. Biking is a good exercise choice for people with bad backs and knees. It is gentle and great for your heart. What a wonderful experience you will have rediscovering your neighborhood and local parks.

3. Exercise with a friend

Do you have a good friend that could join you for walks or bike rides? You’ll stick to your fitness program better when you know that someone is counting on you to be there. You will encourage each other with your shared desire to get fit and stay fit.

4. Geocaching

Geocaching is exploding over the nation!  You use a handheld GPS (or your phone) and go on an actual live treasure hunt. You find trinkets along the way and exchange them for one of your own tickets. Some caches have logbooks and you’ll place the time and date.  It’s a true adventure and gets your entire family outside and enjoying the parks.

5. Hit the trails

Do you have a sense of adventure? Explore some local trails for a morning or afternoon hike. Leave your phone in your backpack and use that time to meditate on God’s goodness. Lift your worries up in prayer and rest in God’s creation.

6. Workout in the park

If the weather is too nice to be inside, but you want to do an online workout – take it to the park! Bring your phone or any data-connected device to your local park, find a shady spot, and turn on a RevWell TV workout! Have fun with it! Soon enough, there may be others who want to join in.

7. Mow the lawn

If you are one of those people who enjoy yard work, count it as a workout! Whether you’re mowing your lawn with a push mower, weeding the garden, or spreading mulch, you are probably working up a major sweat! Be aware of your posture, use your core, and wear comfortable shoes. Now, that’s a job well done!

8. Start a workout group

Are you a leader?  Do you like the help people?  You can start your own walking club in your community.  You can all work together to get healthier, engage in each other lives, and support one another.  It is so fun to have people on board with you—your support system.  There are plenty of resources to help guide you to lead them and check into your local recreation programs.  There is probably a need to be filled—and that would be you!!  Make exercise fun and enjoy!

Congratulations, it’s a new day for the new you.
